What is LINUX?


Linux is an Operating System or Kernel which is created by Linus Torvalds. The reason behind Linux existence is that Linus used to work on UNIX system when he was in college but he thought that UNIX need some changes to make it easier, However his suggestion where rejected by the designer of UNIX. Later on he thought of creating one Operating system which will be receptive to changes, modifications suggested by its user. Thats how LINUX came into existence.

LINUX is mainly used to design their own custom Operating System. Linux is the backbone of many popular operating system like DEBIAN, UBUNTU, FEDORA etc.

LINUX DISTRIBUTION

There are 100s of Linux distribution out there to choose from. Most of them are designed for a specific purpose kept in mind. One of the most popular example of Linux distribution is ANDROID. Arch Linux is popular among Developers. It is designed for user who normally go for DIY (DO IT YOURSELF) approach. Similarly CentOS is most used for Enterprises and web servers. Linux Mint is the 4th most used operating system following UBUNTU at 3rd position after Mac OS and Windows.

Each distribution is built for an specific purpose and most of them are available for FREE, you might want to try one by one to know which one is the best for you. My favorite is UBUNTU.
