TESTING AND CALIBRATING SYSTEM BATTERY

TESTING AND CALIBRATING SYSTEM BATTERY

1. The system has detected the storage capacity of the battery stated below to be very low

Solution: This is an indication that your Battery is/maybe dead. The best and advisable resolution Is to replace the Battery.

The storage capacity, also known as capacity, of a rechargeable battery is the amount of energy the battery can store to power a portable device such as a notebook computer. The lower the storage capacity of a battery, the shorter amount of time it can power a portable device. When battery storage capacity is very low, the battery is near the end of its useful life. All rechargeable batteries gradually lose their storage capacity. This loss in capacity (aging) is irreversible and cannot be restored.

After seeing the first instance of an HP Battery Alert message, you should consider replacing your battery with a new battery soon.

Testing and calibrating the battery using HP System Diagnostics (preferred method for windows 7)

To test the battery using the HP PC Diagnostics UEFI or the HP System Diagnostics, start with the computer off and unplugged from the power. Use the following instructions to test the battery:

  1. Unplug the power cord and turn off the computer.

  2. Press the power button to turn on the computer.

  3. Press the Esc key immediately when seeing the HP or the Compaq logo screen.

The Start Up menu appears.

  1. Press F2 to select F2 System Diagnostics.

  2. Select Battery Test from the list of diagnostic or component tests.

NOTE: If your battery is fully charged, the battery test screen might not appear.

  1. Plug in the power cord.

  2. Click Start Battery Test on the Battery Test page.

The Battery Test page shows Test in progress and the Estimated Time Remaining.

When the test completes, one of the messages and suggested actions from the following table displays:

The battery is functioning properly

The battery does not need calibration. Read the remainder of the message for more information.

Calibrate

The battery is functioning correctly, but it needs to be calibrated.

Read and respond to the message that appears. If the option to use the HP battery auto calibration feature displays, this is preferred. Otherwise, click Learn How to Calibrate your Battery for the steps to calibrate your battery.

 note:

Battery calibration might take several hours to complete and is best performed during long periods when the computer is not in use.

Weak

or

Very Weak

The battery is functioning correctly, but due to normal aging of the battery, the battery life between charges is now significantly shorter than when it was new.

The battery should be replaced to get the most working time out of your battery. If your computer is within its warranty period, you can Contact HP (in English) to verify if your battery is covered under the warranty.

Replace

The battery is reporting a failure and needs to be replaced as soon as possible.

Replace the battery. If your computer is within its warranty period, you can Contact HP (in English) to verify if your battery is covered.

No Battery

A battery is not detected.

A battery is not installed or detected in the battery compartment. If a battery is installed, remove the battery and inspect the pins to see if there is dirt or other foreign matter blocking the connection. Fully insert a battery into the compartment if a battery was not inserted and you want to test the battery in that compartment.

Tips to enhance your Notebook battery life longer

Laptop battery life is the primary concern for most of the Notebook users now.Notebook users always want high performance and thus draining their batteries quickly[Of course you need to compromise at times for the sake of your battery].

First things first:If your notebook battery is too old check it’s condition using some tools available on the internet.

HP has it’s very own tool to check the conditions of notebook batteries.Longer Notebook or laptop battery life

Here are some tips that you can follow to maximize your Notebook battery life:

  1. Do ‘Defragment’ Regularly.Defragmentation speeds up your Hard disks thus reducing some extra burden on your notebook batteries.
  2. Dim your notebook display screen. You can turn down the brightness of your notebook’s display by using Function Keys[In most of the modern laptops].
  3. Don’t run a ‘virus scan’ unnecessarily when you are running on battery, virus scan does add extra load on the CPU so as on the batteries.
  4. Monitor your battery performance on a regular basis.
  5. Clean your battery Contacts:It’s always suggested to take out your battery once in two or three months and clean the metal contacts with cloth moistened with rubbing alcohol.

  8. Maintain Charging-Discharging balance.Once you completely charge your battery, allow it to discharge at least once in a week.
  9. Turn off Bluetooth,IR & wireless radios when running on battery if you no longer need them.
  10. Don’t attach USB devices[if you don’t really need them] attached to your notebook when running on battery.USB devices like iPod if kept attached to your notebook[for charging],are sure to drain your battery quickly.
