Turn an IBM X3100 M4 Server into a workstation
Turn an IBM X3100 M4 Server into a workstation

This is a neat little server that comes from IBM that officially doesnt support Windows 7. In this post I will guide you through making it run Windows 7 using the built in LSI Raid controller and a RAID mode.
If you decide to use AHCI mode however, it becomes easier (as it is supported by Windows 7), but you will be missing a performance (or stability) increase youll get with the RAID.
The LSI raid controller on this server does not have drivers that support Windows 7 - only Windows Server 2008 (R2). Theres also a great many driver packages available from IBM for this controller, so choosing the right one is quite time consuming. After 4 different failed driver packages I finally found the right one that would enable the RAID controller inside the Windows 7 installation PE. I have uploaded it HERE.
Just unrar and copy it onto a flash drive and browse to it during the installation (when it fails to find any hard disks).
Once the system finishes installing - most of the drivers will be installed, the only ones that wont be are the Chipset and the onboard video (Matrox G200ER2). Download the driver for it here.
Chipset drivers are available here.

Woman jailed for cutting houseboy with razor blade another sentenced to 2 years for buying a baby NAPTIP

The Violence against Persons (Prohibition) Act, 2015 has recorded its first casualty as a Federal Capital Territory High Court sitting in Kubwa, Abuja has sentenced a 29 year old housewife, Mrs. Onyekachi Okafor to 9 Months imprisonment for violating aspects of the Act.
This is coming on the heels of the conviction of Mrs. Mavis Solomon by a Federal High Court sitting in Port Harcourt, River State presided over by Justice A. Liman. Mrs. Solomon was charged by NAPTIP to Court for purchasing a 10 Months old baby at the cost of N200, 000 from 2 others who are also under prosecution. The offence is contrary to Section 21 of the Trafficking in Persons (Prohibition) Enforcement and Administration Act, 2015. She pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 2 years imprisonment.
Mrs. Okafor who resides at Dape, along Karmo Road of Abuja was dragged to the FCT High Court by the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) on behalf of the Federal Government for willfully inflicting physical injury on a 10 year old boy (names withheld). The boy who served her and her family as a house help received severe razor blade cuttings from Mrs. Okafor, an act which is in violation of and punishable under section 2 of the Violence against Persons (Prohibition) Act, 2015.
Section 2 subsection 1 of the VAPP Act says,’’ A person who willfully causes or inflicts physical injury on another person by means of any weapon, substance or object, commits an offence and is liable on conviction to a term of imprisonment not exceeding 5 years or a fine not exceeding N100,000.00 or both’’.
Mrs. Okafor who was arrested by officials of NAPTIP in September 2015 had used a sharp razor blade to cut the victim on various parts of his body including his abdomen, left buttocks and thigh.
When the case came up on Monday, 4th July 2016, Mrs Okafor who was arraigned on a one count charge pleaded guilty of the offence. The presiding Judge, Justice N. Ogbonna therefore, found her guilty and sentenced her to 9 months imprisonment without an option of fine. No compensation was however, awarded to the victim.
It would be recalled that the former President, Dr Goodluck Jonathan signed the Violence against Person (Prohibition) (VAPP) Act 2015 on 23rd May, 2015. NAPTIP was made the implementing Agency for the new Act.
The Act which applies only in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, prohibits all forms of violence against persons in private and public life and provides maximum protection and effective remedies for victims and punishment of offenders.

This is What Happens When you Shoot a Gun Underwater!
This is What Happens When you Shoot a Gun Underwater!
Andrew recently shot some handguns underwater and captured the results using a Pentax WG-2, a waterproof digital camera capable of taking basic high speed videos (which can be seen below). Its interesting to see that the bullet does not travel very far underwater. The hollow point bullets also appear to blossom, almost turning inside out.
Andrew remarks that the pressure underwater from the blast feels like someone is punching you in you chest. He also said he fully inspected each handgun and did not detect any damage. Most important is that the sound/pressure underwater can be intense so sticking your head or ears underwater is obviously dangerous and not recommended.

Two Ladies Fight Dirty Over A Guy Inside LAGBUS Enroute Ojota To CMS Photos
Eyewitness said he was in a Lagos red bus popularly called LAGBUS from Ojota going to CMS when these two Ladies who boarded together started fighting over a man.
He said one collected the other’s boyfriend’s number .
How he explained it below..
“See me see wahala o. Na so i entered this bus from Ojota going to the Island, CMS to be precised. Basically, these two ladies boarded at Ojota but i noticed they were arguing with each other as they entered the bus.
The bigger one said something like ‘wa se ma gba number e leyin me?’ O mo pe boyfriend mi ni, ode gba number e. Ashewo’ meaning why would you collect his number, you knew he is my boyfriend and you still collected his number.
You Prostitute’.Then the other lady replied, ‘Ma pe me lasewo”, meaning d’ Don’t call me a Prostitute’.
The next thing i can remember is that they began beating each other.
The bigger statured lady pegged the other one against the seat and beat her like a baby. Only a few people cared to seperate them as they both look like Street girls.”

Windows 8 and Linux on a Toshiba Satellite Laptap
Windows 8 and Linux on a Toshiba Satellite Laptap
Windows 8 and Linux on a Toshiba Satellite Laptap
First, in order to make Windows 8 livable, I would recommend installing Classic Shell. You can download it from http://www.classicshell.net/. As shown in the screenshot, Classic Shell not only provides the Start Menu that is missing in Windows 8, but a greatly improved Windows Explorer. The menu can even look like the version of a Windows Start Menu that you like the best. I really like locating things where they always have been in Programs or the Control Panel, as well as the Windows key on your keyboard will now activate this menu. When you want to go to the Windows Metro look, you can either Alt-tab to the App, or move over the right side of the screen, and activate the Start icon.
Preparing to Install Linux on a Windows 8 System

Create Space to Install Linux Using Disk Management
Select the largest partition and right click to choose to shrink it.
At minimum, you will want to shrink it by at least 10Gb, but with a 640Gb hard drive, I was able to shrink mine by about 400Gb.
Next, to be able to boot the DVD to perform an install, I used the following procedure to switch to BIOS, disable Secure Boot, enable CMS (compatiblity booting), and boot an install DVD.
At first I tried installing CentOS 6, and it succeeded nicely, but without ethernet support by default. I never got wireless working, although I think it may be possible using the compat-drivers discussed below.
When I quickly tired of the lack of available current packages from CentOS 6 (and other related repositories), I wanted to upgrade to Fedora. I tried the latest Fedora 18, but unfortunately, the brand new installer failed. So, next I tried the Fedora 17 DVD install and it succeeded. I was able to get ethernet, wireless, bluetooth, radeon, and other drivers working successfully.
Booting From Windows 8 to Linux
After booting, click the screen or log out of your accountClick the power icon in the lower right corner and choose Restart
Press F2 when Toshiba logo appears
Use arrow keys to navigate to Security menu
Go down until you arrive at Secure Boot
Press Enter to change the value, use arrows to change to Disabled, press Enter to go back
Up to the top, over to the Advanced menu
Down to System Configuration, and press Enter.
Down to Boot Mode
Press Enter to change to value to CMS Boot, and Enter to go back. (Press F10 and Enter)
Press Escape to go back to the top level menus.
Go up and over to the right to the Exit menu
Select Exit and save changes
When you want to come back, then follow this procedure:

Ethernet networking
The Atheros ethernet device is shown on the PCI bus with lspci -nn as:01:00.0 Ethernet controller [0200]: Atheros Communications Device [1969:1090] (rev 10)
There is no driver for this device yet in the kernel, although one is proposed according to http://www.linuxfoundation.org/collaborate/workgroups/networking/alx.
From this document I found the source that is used to make the alx.ko kernel module needed for wired networking. The procedure there will only enable the ethernet driver, but not the other compat-drivers. Once built, this alx kernel module worked well in Fedora.
If you only want ethernet support then the procedure to build the module with the compat-drivers download is:
./scripts/driver-select alx
make
sudo make install
Making (Almost) All the compat-drivers
Since the radeon driver is already working in Fedora, and the one from the compat-drivers doesnt work so well, I didnt want that driver to be built and installed. So, I commented out building the radeon driver in the drivers/gpu/drm/Makefile.I did want to have the wireless driver built, but there was a problem in the source I downloaded with building another wireless driver (wil6210), so building all the drivers wasnt working. Since I didnt need this driver, I commented out building the wil6210 driver in ./drivers/net/wireless/ath/Makefile, as explained below.
Getting Wireless and Wired Ethernet Working
The Toshiba Satellite C855D-S5351 laptop that I using has a Realtek Wireless network interface which uses the rtl8723ae kernel module as a driver. This driver is also not included in the main stream kernel,, but is a part of the compat-drivers package. In order to build everything except the radeon driver and the wil6210 wireless driver that refused to build, I made the following changes:
Second, in the ./drivers/net/wireless/ath/Makefile, the following line originally appeared as:
obj-$(CONFIG_WIL6210) += wil6210/
To stop building this driver a # was added to the beginning of the line like:
#obj-$(CONFIG_WIL6210) += wil6210/
Once these changes are made to the two Makefiles, then you are ready to build and install the drivers with:
make
sudo make install
Centos/Redhat
Although I had no success getting the compat-drivers to be built under Centos or Red Hat Enterprise Linux, I found a couple of potential solutions. There is a repository compatible with RHEL that exists at http://people.redhat.com/sgruszka/compat-wireless.repo.Also, there is the "El Repo" repository for the ethernet driver, and instructions for configuring this repository at http://elrepo.org/tiki/tiki-index.php. Using another Internet connected machine, I did successfully use this repository to download the kmod-alx driver and get it to work with Centos 6.
Fedora 17
Installation of Fedora 17 did present one challenge. The installer would not continue past custom partitioning (I wanted to preserve my /home partition). It complained about not having a BIOS Boot partition for Grub 2. The installer would automatically create this partition in automatic partitioning mode, but provided no way to do it manually in the custom partitioning mode. With UEFI, systems dont use a "MS-DOS Partition Table" on the hard drive, instead they use "Guid Partition Table" or GPT type. The partitioning tool fdisk does not work with GPT partitions, so something like parted or gparted needs to be used instead. Since parted can be very challenging and unforgiving, I decided against using it, even though I could access it from the installation shell.
The solution I used instead to create a special partition with the boot_grub flag set was a Live CD version of Gparted from http://gparted.sourceforge.net/download.php. Once the CD was booted, I created a 10Mb partition, and right-clicked it to set the boot_grub flag on it. Once this partition existed, then Fedora 17 was able to use custom partitioning successfully during installation.

The Computer A poem I wrote in 1984
core of the complexity.
Peripherals are the sectors,
basic to the entity.
its image echos on the monitor bright.
A disk drive scratches its head,
for the data to read or write.
bytes and bits passed in a pulse.
A bit of logic improves calculation,
but life is not true or false.
that output to input is inferior.
Our dull duties are done at quicker rates,
so we can proceed to business superior.
but we are the ones who posed it.
Shrink away those who fear the evolving,
or be of the ones who profit.

The Titanic sails again Australian tycoon unveils plans for perfect replica of doomed vessel except with a few more lifeboats
The Titanic sails again Australian tycoon unveils plans for perfect replica of doomed vessel except with a few more lifeboats
The sequel to the doomed liner that sank 100 years ago was announced on Tuesday - after its designer claimed it would be the most safe cruise ship in the world with ample lifeboats.
With hubris akin to that of the 1912 original, Markku Kanerva said that from a safety perspective there was no vessel on Earth which compared to the new boat.
Scroll down for video.
Despite his confidence the mastermind behind the project, brash Australian mining billionaire Clive Palmer, refused say it was unsinkable.
I think people in the past have done that and lived to regret it.
The blueprint for the Titanic II was unveiled in New York for the first time along with computer generated images of the inside.
They bear a startling resemblance to the 1997 James Cameron film about the ship, which starred Kate Winslet and Leonardo Di Caprio, and show that many of the original features including the famous Grand Staircase will feature in the new boat.
Just like in 1912 there will be three classes of passenger and those with different tickets will not be able to move between the classes, though there will be more toilets for the lower decks than the original.
Everyone on board will however be provided with early-20th-century-style clothes and undergarments in their cabins to get them in the mood.
Whilst there will be air conditioning there will be no TVs and no Internet in a bid to get back to the romance of a bygone age.

RMS Titanic: Harland and Wolff shipyard in Belfast
Titanic II: CSC Jinling Shipyard in China
Professor Palmer outlined his bold vision in which the Titanic II would be carrying the hopes and dreams of people everywhere and represent the reconciliation of man.
There will be capacity for 2,435 passengers and 900 crew.
There will also be lifeboats that can carry 2,700 and a life rafts with an additional capacity of 800.
The original Titanic had just 16 wooden lifeboats that accommodated 1,178 people, one third of the total capacity.
Some 1,502 people died when it sank on April 15 1912.
It was one of the worst peacetime disasters the world has ever seen.
At the launch of Titanic II, which began with a guitar rendition of Celine Dions My Heart Will Go On, Professor Palmer explained that the ship will be 883ft long, which is three inches longer than the original.
It will have a tonnage of 55,800 tonnes compared to 53,210 of the original.
It will have a maximum speed of 24 knots, the same as the first Titanic.
Other original features which will also appear on Titanic II include the Turkish baths, the Cafe Parisien, the two Millioniare Suites, the Chart Room, and the quarters belonging to Titanic Master Captain Edward Smith.
For entertainment guests can enjoy the casino, cinema or shopping area.
The blueprint shows that there will even the same Marconi room where the Titanic sent out its final SOS.
Whereas the original was built by the famous Harland and Wolff shipyard in Belfast, in a sign of how times have changed the Titanic II is being constructed by state-owned Chinese company CSC Jinling Shipyard.
Professor Palmer refused to reveal how much he is paying to build Titanic II but claimed there had already been significant interest, including from celebrities.
He said: 40,000 people had registered for tickets on the ships website with 16 offering between $750,000 and $1m to be on the opening voyage.
He added that on the first trip he would be in third class twiddling the fiddle like Leonardo Di Caprio did in the film.
Mr Kanerva, of Finnish boat designers Deltamarin, added: I can assure you that from a safety point of view it will be absolutely the most safe cruise ship in the world.
We are taking into account all of the possible incidents and accidents and we try to simulate all of those occasions.
Collision is the most common accident we are talking about.
The launch, on the USS Intrepid moored on a pier in Manhattan, was met with a mixed reaction by relatives of those who survived the original sinking.
Helen Benzinger, the great granddaughter of Molly Brown, an American heiress who was on board Titanic, said that she was thrilled at the new design.
The family of the Capt Smith however have said the replica is in bad taste.
