Windows Update error 0x80070490

Windows Update error 0x80070490

When you use Windows Update or Microsoft Update to install updates, you may receive error 0x80070490, if the Component-Based Servicing (CBS) manifest is corrupted.

Resolution

Windows 8.1 or Windows 8

Step 1: Use System File Checker to repair damaged Windows files

Use the System File Checker tool to repair damaged Windows files. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Open an elevated command prompt.
  2. Run the "sfc /scannow" command.
  3. Try to install update again.
For more information about the System File Checker tool, see Use the System File Checker tool to repair missing or corrupted system files.

Step 2: Run the DISM tool

If the problem continues, use the Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM) tool to fix Windows Update corruption errors. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Open an elevated command prompt.
  2. Run the "DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth" command.
Important When you run this command, DISM uses Windows Update to provide the files that are required to fix corruptions. However, if your Windows Update client is already broken, use a running Windows installation as the repair source, or use a Windows side-by-side folder from a network share or from a removable media, such as the Windows DVD, as the source of the files. To do this, run the following command instead:
    DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Note Replace the C:RepairSourceWindows placeholder with the location of your repair source. For more information about using the DISM tool to repair Windows, reference Repair a Windows Image.
To learn more about this tool, see Fix Windows corruption errors by using the DISM or System Update Readiness tool.

Windows 7 or Windows Vista

Step 1: Use System File Checker to repair damaged Windows files

Use the System File Checker tool to repair damaged Windows files. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Open an elevated command prompt.
  2. Run the "sfc /scannow" command.
  3. Try to install update again.
For more information about the System File Checker tool, see Use the System File Checker tool to repair missing or corrupted system files.

Step 2: Run the System Update Readiness tool

If the problem continues, use the System Update Readiness tool to fix Windows corruption errors.

Windows XP

Use the System File Checker tool to repair damaged Windows files. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Open an elevated command prompt.
  2. Run the "sfc /scannow" command.
  3. Try to install update again.
For more information about the System File Checker tool, see Description of Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 System File Checker (Sfc.exe).

Windows Update error 80246002

Windows Update error 80246002

This error started appearing in Windows 7 a few days ago, some say due to the update KB2982791 (unconfirmed yet).

If you were affected by this error - heres how to fix it (so far).

First of all - what doesnt work:

  • Uninstalling the KB2982791 update.
  • Deleting the SoftwareDistribution folder contents inside the Windows folder (this used to work for me in previous Windows Update errors).
  • Renaming the Download subfolder of the SoftwareDistribution folder.
  • Restoring the system to an earlier state may not fix this problem.
  • Running the Windows Update Troubleshooter may not fix this problem.
  • Applying the KB947821 patch may not fix this problem.

What does work (confirmed by many cases, including my own experience with this error):

You need to manually set the DNS addresses (of a well known public DNS server, such as Google DNS) for your network connection to successfully get rid of the update error.

1. Go to Network and Sharing center inside Control Panel.
2. Click "Change Adapter Settings" on the left side pane.
3. Right click the network connection youre currently using to be connected to the internet.
4. Choose Properties.
5. Double click "Internet Protocol Version 4 (Tcp/IPv4)"
6. Change "Obtain DNS Server Address automatically" to "Use the following DNS server addresses" - enter 8.8.8.8 as Preferred DNS server, and 8.8.4.4 as Alternate DNS server.
7. OK all of the windows.
8. Now either restart the machine and check your updates again, or run the ipconfig /flushdns command inside the command prompt in elevated mode.

After this procedure - Windows Update should start searching for updates, it will take a while, so be patient. Eventually you will be presented either with more updates, or the statement that there are no newer updates.

The Selected Disk has and MBR Partition Table Windows can Only be Installed to GPT Disk Error

The Selected Disk has and MBR Partition Table Windows can Only be Installed to GPT Disk Error

In the picture below it appears that the problem occurs during the installation of Windows 7.  In this  action the existing partition of disk is deleted. Then create a partition but when installing the Windows Operating System the message “Windows cannot be installed to this disk. The selected disk has an MBR partition table. On EFI systems, Windows can only be installed to GPT disks".

With this error it means that the existing partition layout of the Hard disk drive is not compatible to Windows 7 Operating system. To fix this problem you have to convert the disk drive layout to GPT.

Convert MBR to GPT Disk Partition

The difference of MBR and GPT

MBR disks  have 1 partition table to keep track of all the blocks in the partition.  If the table becomes corrupt, the entire disk must be recovered from backup.

While Windows GPT-based disks have multiple, redundant partition tables so that if one is detected as being corrupt, it can self-heal itself from a redundant copy of the table.
